Sal Valdez was a teacher for 30 years in the LA Unified School District.
He spent 15 years working as an elementary school teacher and 15 more in special education. While some teachers brought their briefcases to school, Sal brought his guitar. He played a lot of music and read a lot to his students. He also prided himself on letting each student know he cared for them. It wasn’t unusual for Sal to make a home visit just to spend time talking with the parents and getting to know them. Sal was also very involved with community organizing. He held a position with the teachers union where he got to work on policy. He was also a marathon runner and an avid hiker. Sal felt he was at the apex of his career when in 2006 while on vacation with his wife Martha in the Sequoias he suffered a massive stroke.
